The Master’s Journey: From Sintra to Australia

“In 1978, in the mountain mist of Sintra, Portugal, my hands first learned the secrets of a rare trade.”

As a young apprentice under the guidance of two old-world masters, I was entrusted with stripping back and restoring original furniture from the Palácio da Pena.

These foundational years in the palace workshop became my passport to Australia in 1989. Today, that same lineage of 18th-century craft is preserved in my Bowral workshop. I don’t simply reupholster furniture; I restore the soul of a piece using the exact materials—horsehair, flax, and twine—intended by its original maker.
