Forty-Eight Years in the Service of the Craft

My journey began at age 14 in the historic village of Sintra, Portugal, as an apprentice to the master upholsterer Sr. Ferreira. It was there, within a workshop trusted with the restoration of royal treasures for the Palácio da Pena, that I learned the 'internal truth' of fine furniture. My early days were spent stripping back palace pieces to their bare frames, uncovering the forgotten structural secrets of 19th-century construction before mastering the art of rebuilding them.

That foundation—forged in the workshops and palace interiors of Europe—has guided every commission since. When an 1837 Australian Colonial Cedar Sofa arrives at the atelier carrying its original horsehair and hand-tied lashings intact, I see not a repair job, but a document. The task is never to replace what time has done, but to honour it.

Today, operating from his specialised atelier in Welby within the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Carlos brings that same European master-level discipline to Australia's premier civic collections, pastoral estates, and private country houses.

Working strictly within the guidelines of the Burra Charter, his benchmark philosophy ensures that every frame is treated as a cultural artifact. By utilizing hand-stitched horsehair matrices, traditional hand-tensioned jute webbing, and faithful Andrew Lenehan archival processes, Carlos ensures the hand of the original maker is preserved for generations to come.
